Quickstart Resume Frequently Asked Questions

While we cannot provide individual tech support to users who are having difficulty downloading Quickstart Resume Templates, we have attempted to answer some of the frequently asked questions below:

Question: I get a window that pops up and says that I am requesting an insecure file. What should I do?
Answer: You should always be careful in downloading files from the Internet, especially executables where you are uncertain of their origin. However, these files are document only and are malware-free.

Question: Why doesn't the information format correctly in my word processor?
Answer: It could be for one of more of the following reasons:

  • You did not download the right version of the file. You need to download the version that is the same or prior version of the word processor you are using. Recheck the version of your word processor and try again. You can download several different versions to find the one that works best for you.
  • You are downloading to a word processor other than Word. While many claim to import Word file formats, there can be some formatting changes in the translation. You will need to manually reset the formatting within the document.
  • You may have a different default page size and/or printer settings. The original files were formatted for 8.5"x11" paper for an HP LaserJet4 printer. You may need to manually adjust the formatting to accommodate your specific printer.

Question: I tried downloading but can't get it to work at all.
Answer: First try downloading the Rich Text File (.rtf) file. If that doesn't work, try downloading the text file. If this works, then the problem is with your word processor, not your browser.

Question: I tried downloading the text file, but it just appeared in my browser window.
Answer: Some browsers format .txt files into the browser window instead of downloading. If your browser does this, try right-clicking on the link, then choose "Save Target As…" and then save it to your copmuter. You can also copy-and-paste the text from the browser window into your word processor.

Question: I tried everything and nothing seems to work
Answer: Go to our Web-based resume and copy it directly from the screen. It's not pretty, but it will get the job done.
