Since it was established by President Kennedy in 1961, Peace Corps represents an American legacy of global service. It provides its host countries with sustainable solutions by sharing America’s most precious resource – its people.
Peace Corps is a people-to-people form of service at the grassroots level. Peace Corps Volunteers serve with local governments, organizations, schools and entrepreneurs to create sustainable projects with local communities. They learn a new language, experience new cultures and return to the United States as global citizens.
In addition to the experience that Peace Corps Volunteers gain abroad, Peace Corps also provides tangible benefits to those who serve. Peace Corps Volunteers may qualify for student loan benefits and receive health and dental care, a living stipend, travel expenses, and a readjustment allowance when they return to the United States. Volunteers also receive career services support when they return home and are eligible for Peace Corps-partner graduate school opportunities and advantages in federal employment.
