Focus on Formatting: Is the Functional Resume Right for You?
In the current economic situation, the idea of crafting a resume seems daunting. And if you've recently graduated from college, are just returning to the workforce, are seeking a career change, or have worked a series of short stints for several employers — it's hard to know where to start.

The functional resume showcases what you've accomplished, rather than calling attention to the fact that you've been out of work, have worked in a different industry, don't have much experience, or have had five jobs in three years.

Below the Objective section, add an Experience and Accomplishments section, in which you group your skills by category — for example:
  • Marketing
  • Management
  • Customer Service
  • Finance
Under each of these categories, list your accomplishments — for example, "Led marketing strategy that generated revenue growth of 15 percent in one year," etc. Then include a Professional History section, in which you list your past jobs.

After completing your functional resume, search for marketing, engineering, finance, or other jobs on the CollegeGrad job board. If you're not sure whether this format is right for you or your profession, check out one of our resume templates for some ideas here.
