- Job Search Tip of the Week, by Brian Krueger, author of "College Grad Job Hunter," the #1 book for entry level job search:

"Internet Job Search Strategies"

While the Internet has earned a well-deserved "Biggest Hype for the New Millenium" title for all its media coverage, job search has become established as one of the premier activities taking place on the Net. This spells good news for you, since most college students have been actively surfing much longer and have ready access to all that the Internet has to offer. If you truly want to find a level playing field for your job search, the Internet is your stadium.

The best job sites are far and few. There are many, but few actually have real content to help you in your job search.

Here is the listing of the Top Four:

    CollegeGrad.com (www.CollegeGrad.com)
OK, we're biased on this one. But for good reason. CollegeGrad.com is ranked the #1 entry level Web site in the world (by Yahoo, Alexa and TopJobSites) and has more career information than any other site on the Web. And we've won more Web awards (over 75) than any other career site. There is information on job postings (over 20,000), employer contacts (over 10,000), resumes (over 180 templates), career info (more than 350 careers), salary info (for more than 1,000 occupations) and more! There are other entry level sites out there, but they're either too small or closed access (i.e. you need a user ID and password to access). CollegeGrad.com is the largest and broadest entry level job site. If you haven't seen all the information here at CollegeGrad.com, it's time to take a look!

OK, now that you've had a chance to review the #1 entry level Web site, let's take a look at The Big Three general job sites:

    Monster.com (www.monster.com)
Monster definitely has plenty of jobs. More than 1,000,000 at last count. But many of these are posted by recruiters and are not "real" jobs at "real" companies. The problem with this is sorting through all the "clutter" jobs as well as the "entry level need not apply" jobs to get to the ones that truly matter. Monster.com is the 800-pound gorilla of the job search space and they act like it.

    HotJobs (www.hotjobs.com)
HotJobs is organized by job categories, which allows you to drill down quickly to the specific job type or industry you are seeking. It's important to note that there is not a large amount of overlap between Monster.com and HotJobs, both in terms of job postings and candidate registrations, so it's worth a visit.

    Careerbuilder.com (www.careerbuilder.com)
Careerbuilder.com shows over 300,000 jobs representing more than 25,000 employers in virtually every industry and field. They also claim to have more than 3,000,000 active resumes. Do the math--that's 10 resumes for every available job. Not very good odds, but that is the reality.

Don't get blown away by the sheer immensity of the number of jobs and the exhaustion level you might encounter in attempting to sift through jobs, especially at The Big Three. Once you have a clear focus on what you are looking for, set up a job search agent at CollegeGrad.com as well as The Big Three. That way, you will get an e-mail whenever a new job is posted that meets your specific criteria. But make sure your job search agent is limited enough so that you don't get inundated with useless spam. Don't worry if you get it wrong the first time you set up your job search agent, since you can always change it in the future.

- Job Search Book Online

There are at least two other entry level Web sites that offer books on job searching, proclaming that they will tell you everything you need to know about entry level job search.

However, there is a very important point about these books they don't mention up front: they cost money.

At CollegeGrad.com, we give you two things they don't:

    1. The #1 entry level job search book ("College Grad Job Hunter").
    2. It's free.

It's that simple. So don't buy the hype. Read the real information you need for FREE:

Don't ever pay for books or reports or resources of lower quality when you can access the very best quality information for free.

P.S. Yes, you can buy "College Grad Job Hunter" in hardcopy format as well at Amazon.com for $15 (actually, 30% off that price), but the online version is better. Why? Because the version at Amazon.com (the 2003 edition) is being continually updated at CollegeGrad.com. So the most current version of the book is actually the online, free version.
