Improving Your Out-Of-State Search

If you are conducting a job search directed toward an out-of-state location, you can greatly improve your odds by establishing a local address in the target city or region. Employers are much more likely to respond to local phone numbers and addresses.

The best way to do this is to use the address of a friend or relative. Caution: if it's the home of friends or relatives with a different last name, ask them if they will answer the phone without the family name for the duration of your search. Otherwise, the caller may assume they reached a wrong number and hang up. Next best is to use a mail drop (such as Mail Boxes Etc.) and an answering service. In either case, information can be forwarded to you as often as you desire.
