Another innovative way to reach those in your career focus group is to
spend some time surfing the forum postings, making note of each posting
and the underlying threads. Log the addresses of those who appear to be authorities in
your career area. If you do not have an automated way to log the addresses, you
may end up having to write them down by hand. Depending on the forum, you
might find anywhere from 10 to over 100 addresses of major and minor
authorities in your field. When your collection is of sufficient size, send an e-mail letter to this
group similar to the above posting. Amazingly, this type of
direct e-mail can often generate over 20% response or higher (while traditional
snail mail techniques average 2 to 3% at best). You might only get a "Have you
contacted _____ yet?" response, but it can be another lead on your way to your
new job!
