QUESTION:

Brian,

I first wanted to thank you for this web site!!! I really consider it 75% of the reason why I have come across a wonderful position.

I do have a question for you:

I have negotiated my salary, and although the overall package is good there were a few concerns I had voiced in our meeting after I was given a formal proposal. (As far as salary reviews, job titles, etc.) I would like to accept the offer on the basis of his verbal promises made. ( i.e.. he has promised to be very flexible in reviews and over compensation growth on the scale of professional growth)

I was wondering (since it doesn't seem that he will make me sign a contract) how I would go about writing an acceptance letter, and whether I should include our verbal agreement since this seems like a valid way to confirm things???

I hope this gives you enough information, I'm looking forward to your response!

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Jackie -

Write a letter of acceptance, with the following additional wording:

"As we discussed, it is my understanding that ..."

...then list each of the items you have discussed. The close the paragraph with:

"If my understanding of these topics is not correct, please let me know."

Keep it short and sweet--to the point, but not legalistic. By doing so, you will have established a written basis for the areas discussed, so that you can refer back to it later.

Is it a legally enforeable document? Probably not. But it does document the topics so that they can be referred to later. And if this manager leaves, you have a paper trail of what was committed to.
