I recently had an interview with a division within the company that I am currently working for.
The interview took place around the beginning of January.
My question is would it be appropriate to call the interviewee to follow-up on a response on when the position would
be filled?
I was informed during the interview that they needed someone immediately, but no one has been hired.
Would it be appropriate to call and ask about the position?

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:
Hi Cynthia -
In a word: YES! Any time you have an interview (whether internal or external),
you should always close the interview with your statement of your interest (i.e. ask for the job) and secondly,
if not offered the position on the spot, ask what the next step will be.
Then diligently track the process through to the next step.
It sounds like you might currently be in "second place" to no one in particular.
If they're still fishing, you should ask what it is specifically that they are looking for which they did not find in you.
It may provide you with another opportunity to sell yourself to the decision maker.
