QUESTION:

Hi, Brian!

I'm very glad to find this website, because I have this question that no one can answer it for me.

I am an international student in Australia. I come from Indonesia. This is my final year in Business, majoring in Professional Accounting. And I'm looking for a job right know. But, I have some questions that need to be answered:

  1. I don't have any work experience at all. Even work volunteer, or in McD's, or anything. So what I have to put my work experience in my resume. How do I make this not become my weakness, that would stop the company from hiring me?

  2. I have this experience in my church organisation. Two Years ago I was a leader for a musical concert for my church that invited almost 2000 people (so it's quite huge). Should I tell this experience? because I read in the book people can tell something about religion & ethnic in the resume or CV. If I can put it, what heading I should use in resume, and how I explain it?

  3. Some people said that I have advantage as an International student, because I can speak 2 languages, and I have a cross-educational background and multicultural perspective. How should I put all of these things in my CV and resume, so it become my strong side.

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Ivan -

Following are the answers to your questions:

  1. If you have no work experience, take any projects you have done in your academic experience (especially if they are case studies or real world simulations) and use a section titled "Project Experience" rather than "Experience" as a substitute.

  2. Normally, I would say not to include the church experience. However, since you are lacking other experience, you can include this, but list it as "Church Organisation" without any reference to the specific religion. Use the header of "Activities" for this reference.

  3. List your fluency in your Summary section. For more information on resume layout, take a look at our Quickstart Resume Templates at our site.

I wish you well.
