Hi my name is Sarah and I would like to ask you a few questions.
What advise would you give to a college freshman regards to having a job while attending school?
To let you know I'm going to be studing dentistry so I don't know how much of my time that will be taking up and I
don't know what a good job would be to consider if I'm thinking about going into dentistry.
Thank you for your time.

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:
Hi Sarah -
I recommend following this schedule for jobs throughout college:
After your freshman year: find a job working in the industry you are hoping to work in after graduation,
but don't worry about the job content itself.
This is a first job to see the industry first-hand to know what you're really getting into.
After your sophomore year: try to get a job which will, in general, reflect the general job content.
It could be termed an internship, but more likely will simply be referred to as summer employment.
General job content is important, specific job content is not.
After your junior year: this is the critical job for positioning yourself for your first job after college.
Try to get a job as near as possible to the specific job content of what you would like to be doing after college.
If, along the way, you decide that the industry or the job of your dreams is not what you had thought it would be,
it gives you sufficient time to change your course (or alter it) in your academic studies.
Better now that committing to the career full-time after college with little or no recourse in changing your degree
and studies.
And don't worry about job titles--it's what you do, not what it's called, that is important.
