Forum - Ask the Hiring Manager

QUESTION:

If you are going to an interview for a marketing position and they ask for examples of work you have done, but do not have any examples what do you do? Especially if they ask for a paper, but don't have. They asked for a writing example and what do you write about?

From: Erika, Recent Grad, Indiana University

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Erika -

Usually a request for a writing example is NOT a request to write about something. It is a request to provide the employer with a writing example of your already existing work. I assume that you've written papers at Indiana University and I further assume that you've probably written papers related to marketing (or at least business-related classes). That is what you should provide.

Choose one of your best (or THE best) papers you have written, ideally also close to the subject or the position.

If you have an graded "A" (or A+) paper in your possession, you can make an even greater impact by giving them a copy of the graded paper. Otherwise, just provide them with a clean copy of your best work.

I wish you well!
