QUESTION:

I have a concern that I have not seen addressed anywhere and I would appreciate your advice! Great Site!

I know you have said not to post your GPA on your resume unless it's the magical 3.0, but what if the GPA is in the area of 2.8 or 2.9? (My Overall GPA is a 2.883)

I feel like many employers are going to pass over my resume because I don't have a 3.0 listed on my resume, but by not posting my GPA they may think I have something like a 1.5??

There are a few jobs for medium-sized CPA firms which list their criteria at a minimum GPA of 2.75... ??

(Of course, I am not addressing this question in regard to companies who request 3.0 GPAs, but to companies who don't list a minimum GPA or if someone is applying w/o any job advertisment or a general advertisement.)

Thanks so much.

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Cherie -

Good question. As you know, it can be difficult to have a "one size fits all" strategy--that's why we have the forum, to give everyone the opportunity to ask it from their own personal angle.

In your case, as long as you acknowledge the fact that you may be screened out by the "3.0 and above" crowd, it would be acceptable to include your GPA. As you said, not listing it will set off sirens that your GPA may be low--and possibly much lower than it actually is.

And remember that you can round up to the nearest tenth--in your case, 2.9/4.0.

So go ahead and list it. Just be aware that it will limit you somewhat from those firms who are firm (sorry for the pun) on the 3.0 and above.

All my best to you!
