Forum - Ask the Hiring Manager

QUESTION:
I am a recent graduate with a degree in interior design. I have strong computer skills and graduated high in my class. Yet, the job market is flooded with people that have more experience than me. How do you get your foot in the door to get the experience that is necessary during times like this?

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:
Hi Gabriel -
You're right, it is a tough time--probably the most difficult entry level market in 20 years. But that doesn't mean that jobs don't exist and that employers are not hiring. It's just harder to find the openings.
Make sure that you fully develop your personal network. This is the "hidden job market" that so many people talk about. I have been continuing a series of tips for entry level job seekers in our newsletter on this topic. If you would like to explore this topic further, please read the more detailed information on networking located at CollegeGrad.com.
Remember, all it takes is one door to open. You may get your knuckles bloody knocking on doors, but all it takes is one. Expand your network until you can honestly say: "I have contacted everyone in my field and everyone who knows anyone in my field." And if you can ever actually say that, start at the beginning of your list and contact them all again. Things can and do change.
All my best to you. Keep striving and you will find what you are looking for. And never, ever give up. Your new job is waiting for you. Your job right now is to find it.
