QUESTION:

I have received a job offer from a big company after a series of interviews. The offer was made orally, because they needed to decide for what specific group I will work before writing a formal letter. However, almost a month had passed without getting this formal answer, I am really worried about that.

I called them back, and they said that they are still looking for the right place for me, do you think it is normal for such a process to take this long.

Thanks,

From: Karen Edwards, Recent Graduate, Binghamton University

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Karen -

You have reason to worry. Without the formal offer letter, you really don't have a formal offer. You simply have an "offer" that they will try to find a spot for you.

You should continue seeking out other opportunities for three reasons:

  1. If you receive another offer, you can force the hand of the company in providing you with a written offer.
  2. If your verbal offer falls through, you will have other opportunities in process.
  3. You may find a better company in the process. Any company that is not willing to commit to an offer on paper should be suspect from the start.

I know it can seem disheartening to re-start your job search when you had thought it was already over. But you need to control the keys to your destiny. Never turn over those keys to someone else.
