QUESTION:

Of what value is advice/informational interviewing? (Some people have tried to convince me that this is the one true way to land a satisfying position).

From: Jon Dunn, University of Denver

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Jon -

Informational interviewing has its time and place. It is an excellent tool for career research and exploration. However, it should NOT be used as a ruse to get an interview. Very simply, informational interviewing should be used during the career planning phase, but NOT during the job search phase. Informational interviewing will provide you with information about careers and industries that you might not be able to access any other way. It is also has been the subject of great abuse by those that have misued it as a deceptive way to get a job interview. That is NOT the proper use of informational interviewing.

It is NOT the "one true way" to finding a job. The one true way is the bloody knuckles approach. Knock on enough doors, and one will eventually some of them will open for you.

Be honest and forthright in all your dealings. It will pay you many returns over the course of your life.
