QUESTION:

I am a Chemistry major and I am interested in studying biomedical science research, but first I would like to move to London for 1 year. I am only 21 yrs old and I believe this type of spontaneous energy is now or never. I don't feel like I am ready for graduate school or medical school. But, my parents think that if I wait I won't ever further my education. How can I make this year in London productive and please my parents?

From: Sharifa Curry, Senior, Central State University

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Sharifa -

Boy, I hate getting into parent vs. child arguments, but I believe the possible answers could be...

  1. Go to school in London - either as an undergrad or possibly begin your grad schooling there.
  2. Go to London to work, but pre-apply for grad school for the following year in advance.

Overall, I agree with you that it may be a once-in-lifetime opportunity for you and you should take it if you can work out the details. But knowing parents (I am one myself, although my kids are only in grade school), try to do your best to meet their needs also. They have a lot invested in you. And I don't just mean in a financial sense.
