Forum - Ask the Hiring Manager

QUESTION:

Hi there,

I consistently hear you saying don't just send resumes only in replying to questions. I understand that one should follow up a cover letter and resume shortly after with a phone call, but are you saying I should make the call prior to sending in my resume?

Thank you for your time and patience.

From: Mark Munch, Senior, San Jose State University

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Mark -

Yes, you should always attempt contact first via phone or in person. You should never send a resume as a "hope and prayer" solicitation of potential interest. I won't hire you based on your resume and your odds of even getting the interview are much lower on the "send-the-resume-and-cross-my-fingers" approach. You are much more likely to get the interview (and proceed toward the eventuality of a potential job offer) if you know specific information about what the company is looking for. The resume is important, but it should not be a crutch in your job search. Use it only when requested.
