QUESTION:

I am in the process of interviewing for my second "real job" (I am being downsized from my current position, which was my first job out of college).

This is my question: I see scads and scads of sample resumes and cover letters, but no examples of a follow-up letter. Am I out of touch if I think that I should send a letter to the people that I interview with ASAP after the interview?

Thanks for taking the time to help me!

From: Mara S. Klein

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Mara -

You're not out of touch--in fact, you are exactly in line with my recommendations (see the "After the Interview" chapter in my book). In fact, you can view that specific recommendation (along with the other of the two most important post-interview activities) listed here at our site.

I do not provide a specific example follow-up letter, because this should be a personal letter. But I do give a structure to follow, which will keep it personal without being canned.
