QUESTION:
Hello there!
I just graduated from college and I am an international student from Indonesia. Right now, I am holding a Practical Training Visa which lasts only one year. I am having problem getting permanent employment because of this. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!!

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:
Hi San-San -
Keep in mind that very few employers will sponsor you for the F-1 (Practical Training) visa unless a) you are able to provide a quick and immediate payback during that 12 month period, or b) they are willing to invest in the H-1B following the conclusion of the F-1.
What are your plans? Will you be going back to Indonesia after the 1 year? If so, you are limited to those companies that fit the "a" profile above. If you are interested in continuing with an H1-B, you should look for companies that have a history of sponsorship.
You can likely find that information through the Career Placement Office at your university, where they will be able to tell you which companies have accepted international graduates into their workforce.
But don't stop there. The Internet is an excellent location to find additional companies that are willing to sponsor. Most companies that have an Internet presence are progressive companies. This often (although not always) translates into a company that is also willing to sponsor.
Keep pounding the pavement. Your new job is out there. Just make sure you use the proper tools in your search for finding it.
Happy hunting!
