Forum - Ask the Hiring Manager

QUESTION:

I am writing to request some assistance with my cover letter for the Sports Information Department (SID) at my university. I would like to impress the director because SID is my first choice employer and jobs are scarce.

If you could be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Alethia -

The way you can impress them is with what I call the "I Love Only You Technique" in my book: modify the objective on your resume to specifically include the Sports Information Department (actually using the name) as part of the objective. In addition to the objective, you should modify the entire resume specifically to SID and the position being offered. Build your resume around your qualifications for the position.

Most people modify the cover letter. But employers often expect that to be modified or customized. Resumes are typically viewed as being static. If you take the time to customize, you will stand out!
