QUESTION:

Hi -

I have been reading your article on dressing codes for interviews. I have a major problem. I suffer from a disease known as lymphedema, and it has resulted in my right leg being heavily swollen. As a result I cannot find proper trousers that fit me, and as a result I can only wear baggy jeans. I cannot afford tailor made trousers. So could you please advise me on what to do since I have an interview next week.

I Hope to hear from you very soon.

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Nkosinathi -

Baggy jeans are fine. But you should bring it to the attention of the primary contact BEFORE the interview so that they are aware of it. You should also be prepared to give a quick and concise summary of your medical condition, even if it is NOT asked for. Without doing so, you may leave lingering doubts as to your medical condition and ability to perform work.

This situation is very similar to the many times that I have interviewed someone during the day (usually for a lunch interview) where they have to explain to me that it's a casual day at the office. It would obviously be awkward at best for them to dress for the interview in their car to and from our office. As long as they tell me in advance, I have no problem with it. But if they meet me (I dress in standard business dress) in blue jeans and a T-shirt with nary a mention of their mode of dress, it could cause problems.

The work world may be going casual, but the interview world is still standard business conservative. Take the time to meet that standard and be willing to note any necessary exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Do well on your interview. Who knows...it could be a great conversation starter if you're willing to accept some self-deprecating humor on the subject.
