Forum - Ask the Hiring Manager

QUESTION:

* Going Places - Which job markets - geographically speaking - are the hot spots (and cold) for engineers in aerospace, electronic, electrical, software and chemical engineering?

From: Doug Finch

ANSWER FROM BRIAN KRUEGER:

Hi Doug -

Although historically economists have viewed job markets geographically, the correct modern view is to view the job market by industry. This is where the true "hot spots" (and "cold spots") are seen. In their career, engineers need to focus on developing "cross-industry-portable" skills that can transfer to new industries that are in high demand. Those who do not will be faced with possible extended periods of low demand or unemployment that are outside of the individual's control. To take control, an enginner needs to develop industry-independent skills that can easily be ported to other industries.
