Job Search on the Internet
While the Internet has earned a well-deserved "Most Hype for the New Millenium" title for all its media coverage, job search has become established as one of the premier activities taking place on the Net. While most colleges have been wired into the Net for more than two decades, it is only in the past several years that the Net has come into widespread commercial usage. This spells good news for you, since most college students have been actively surfing much longer and have ready access to all that the Internet has to offer. If you truly want to find a level playing field for your job search, the Internet is your stadium.
How many times have you spent hours on the Net, only to find that you didn't accomplish what you set out to seek in the beginning. A series of endless links brought you little or no actual results. The purpose of this column is to point you only to the best of the best. The Internet certainly has innumerable nooks and crannies where computer geeks can hide loads of useless information. If you searched long enough and hard enough, you could probably find a job in Podunk, Iowa listed at some obscure Web site. But the truly productive and efficient sites are few, yet rich in resources waiting to be mined. Following are the best Web sites for your job search:
- CollegeGrad.com (www.CollegeGrad.com) - OK, we're biased on this one. But for good reason. We're ranked the #1 entry level Web site in the world and have more career information than any other site on the Web. And we've won more Web awards (over 65) than any other career site. There is information on job postings (over 100,000), employer contacts (over 8,000), resumes (over 140 templates), career info (more than 350 careers), salary info (for more than 1,000 occupations) and more! If you haven't seen all the information here at our site, it's time to take a look!
- Careerbuilder.com (www.careerbuilder.com) - Careerbuilder.com is one of the largest general job boards on the Net, but it requires sifting through a lot of "entry level need not apply" jobs to get to what you're really looking for. It's worth a stop, but don't become frustrated with the lack of entry level. Just come back to our site and you can search all entry level jobs.
- JobWeb (www.jobweb.com) - JobWeb is sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and provides a variety of career resources for college students.
- America's Job Bank (www.americasjobbank.com) - brought to you by your friendly, neighborhood government agency, a/k/a Job Service. The site is worth taking a look at for the simple fact that many employers are required to post their jobs through Job Service, which then end up on this site (which is why they actually have more job postings than any other site). It can be difficult to sort through all the jobs and remember that just because it's posted here doesn't necessarily mean that the job is open and available (since jobs which may end up being filled with internal candidates are still posted here to meet the governmentrequirements).
