U.S. Navy - Physicians

For many aspiring doctors, there are many hurdles. First theres the ever-increasing cost of medical school. Then theres the cost of maintaining a practice after graduation. And often, when all is said and done, many doctors in private practice find themselves spending more time running their business than actually practicing medicine.

If you are a medical student, pre-med student or a practicing doctor and are facing these issues, the Navy can help. You will become part of a skilled, well-equipped and established practice where you will get a chance to put your training to work. Youll work with top medical professionals from across the country. Your equipment and malpractice insurance are covered by the Navy. And youll get the chance to teach, work on research or explore new fields of medicine.

Plus the Navy can help you get debt free by the end of your residency. For students and recent graduates, we have programs that can help:

The Armed Forces Health Professionals Scholarship Program (AFHPSP): Provides up to $175,000 or more for up to four years of medical training, including all school-required fees and expenses, books and equipment (excludes food, housing and computers). Also included is a monthly stipend of at least $1,058. Financial Assistance Program (FAP): Provides extra payment of $22,379 plus a monthly stipend of $1,058 for physicians in certain specialties, including Family Practice, Orthopedic Surgery, Internal Medicine and General Surgery. Residents also keep their current residency pay. After residency, FAP physicians agree to serve for a certain time.

There are also additional programs for residents; contact us for more information. And when it comes to advanced training, the Navy encourages physicians to hone and expand their skills through meetings, workshops and additional schooling.

In addition, there are the fringe benefits of a naval career: the chance to practice around the world, officer rank, free and low-cost travel for you and your family, plus 30 days paid vacation every year to enjoy it. And without the stress of your own practice, youll have more time for your private life.

Requirements are fairly straightforward: You must be a U.S. citizen under the age of 40 (although age limits can be waived), you must pass the Navys physical fitness standards and you must complete certain minimum levels of training and education. Your time requirement will be at least three years of active duty depending on the program under which you receive your commission.
