U.S. Navy - Medical Services![]()
The demanding and far-reaching nature of todays Navy calls for highly trained medical professionals skilled in almost every type of medicine, from general family practice to administration to highly specialized fields like aerospace medicine. If youre considering or have a career in medical services, look to the Navy for the chance to work with top-notch people and state-of-the-art equipment on exciting projects around the world.
In addition to generous pay, full benefits and a great vacation package, the Navy allows you to focus on your field or specialty. Youll get to concentrate on what you do best. And from a practical standpoint, the Navy will help pay for your education, whether youre in school or dealing with student loans. Its a chance to do important work for an important cause, help your country, and put your career on the fast track – all at the same time.
For students and recent graduates, we have programs that can help:
- The Armed Forces Health Professionals Scholarship Program (AFHPSP): Provides optometry students full tuition for up to four years of training, including all school-required fees and expenses, books and equipment (excludes food, housing and computers). Also includes a monthly stipend of at least $1,020.
- The Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP): In return for a naval commitment, get military pay and allowances (up to $22,000 annually), plus benefits, for up to 24 months while still in school. Helps pay for graduate or undergraduate work in the Health Care Administration, Physical Therapy, Environmental Health, Hygiene, Optometry and Pharmacy fields.
When it comes to advanced training, the Navy encourages its medical professionals to hone and expand their skills through meetings, workshops and additional schooling.
Plus there are the fringe benefits: the chance to practice around the world, officer rank, free and low-cost travel for you and your family, plus 30 days paid vacation every year.
Requirements are fairly straightforward: You must be a U.S. citizen 34 years of age or under, you must pass the Navys physical standards and you must complete certain minimum levels of training and education. Your service obligation will be at least three years of active duty depending on the program under which you receive your commission.
