U.S. Navy - Dentistry

Dont let the cost of education, equipment or insurance turn you from dentistry. Dont let the pressure and stress of a private practice frustrate you. Instead, look to the Navy. Our dentistry program could be just what you need to relieve financial burdens and allow you to focus on helping others.

Youll be helping yourself, too. In the Navy, youll have modern equipment, an established practice, a highly trained staff – and the chance to work in a variety of locations around the world, or even aboard ship. And youll never have to worry about paying for malpractice insurance or balancing the books.

Plus the Navy can help you get debt free by the end of your residency. For students and recent graduates, we have programs that can help:

  • The Armed Forces Health Professionals Scholarship Program (AFHPSP): Provides full tuition for up to four years of dental training, including all school-required fees and expenses, books and equipment (excludes food, housing and computers). Also includes a monthly stipend of $1,020.
  • The Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP): In return for a naval commitment, get military pay and allowances (up to $22,000 annually), plus benefits, for up to 24 months while still in school.
  • Financial Assistance Program (FAP): Provides extra payment of $21,580 plus a monthly stipend of $1,020 for dentists who are in their residency for oral surgery or endodontics. Residents also their current residency pay. After residency, FAP dentists agree to serve for a certain time.

Talk to us about these or any Navy opportunities that interest you. And once youre in, you can apply for positions in Advanced Education in General Dentistry or General Practice Residency to keep your career moving forward.

Pay is competitive – up to $76,000 your first year including a $30,000 signing bonus – plus there are the fringe benefits: officer rank, free and low-cost travel for you and your family, plus 30 days paid vacation every year to enjoy it. And without the stress of your own practice, youll probably have more time for your private life.

Requirements are fairly straightforward: You must be between the ages of 21 and 40 (although age limits can be waived in certain cases), your degree must come from an American Dental Association accredited dental school, you must pass the Navys physical fitness standards and you must complete certain minimum levels of training and education. Your service obligation will be at least three years of active duty depending on the program under which you receive your commission.
